 A time to build bridges

A time to build bridges

TWO years ago, a Mildura Muslim woman was refused service at a local shopping centre simply because she was wearing a headscarf.

But the discriminatory shift in some attitudes toward the Sunraysia Muslim community has hopefully been redirected.

As part of Cultural Diversity Week, a panel of Islamic leaders held a forum called “What is Islam?” in Mildura last night and opened the floor to questions about Muslim culture and religion.

Mithat Demir, the Mildura projects co-ordinator for the Australian Intercultural Society, was one of the panel members.

He was joined by Dr Salih Yucel, an internationally renowned academic, writer and lecturer in Islamic studies; Mildura Mosque’s Iman, Faruq Ana; and local woman Fulya Celik.
