MILDURA risks losing a one-in-100-year opportunity if plans for Victoria’s second casino are successfully opposed.
Famed celebrity cook Stefano de Pieri says the concept has great merit and could revitalise the region following years of drought.
Mr de Pieri said he felt compelled to comment on the proposed Mildura Entertainment and Convention Centre following public criticism of the plan.
He said the gaming aspect of the convention centre was a “very small” component of the project which would also include a world-class five-star hotel and a concert/entertainment venue capable of hosting some of the best entertainers in the world.
“I feel the time has come to stand up,” Mr de Pieri said.
“The proposal has great merit ... it will revitalise our town which has suffered due to a combination of lack of water, climate change and falling commodity prices,” he said.
“It is nice to believe that alternative industries can be developed over time and nothing stops us from vigorously pursuing this option.
“I am involved in the manufacturing of local produce and have created many jobs, but alternative industries take a long time to develop.”
Mr de Pieri said Crown Casino legislation passed by State Parliament meant a second casino in the state could not be built within 150 kilometres of Melbourne.
