SAN JOSE: Imagine a former wheat paddock somewhere around Red Cliffs covered in hundreds of hectares of silver balloons.
That’s what you’ll see if a Californian company manages to convince the world that its technology is the answer to replacing the world’s dirty energy-producers with solar.
A balloon, much the same as metallic balloons popular at parties, with clear plastic on the sunny side and a shiny metallic bottom, with a solar collector sandwiched in the middle filled with air was pitched at the five-member Mildura solar mission in San Jose, about an hour outside San Francisco, yesterday.
Pitching is a word you hear a lot in this hotbed of solar innovation as the world tries to find the technology able to meet the politicians’ grand plans of replacing electricity generation with renewables, chiefly, solar in the next decade.
