Collision reinforces call for 40km/h zone

09 Sep, 2009 05:00 AM
RED Cliffs Primary School is calling for a 40km/h school zone near Murray Avenue where a B-double truck rear-ended a station wagon on Monday afternoon.

The collision on Calder Highway about 3.20pm was just metres from the school crossing as students were starting to leave the school.

Mildura Police said a 47-year-old man driving a Kenworth prime mover truck collided into the rear of the Kia station wagon turning into Murray Avenue, driven by a Red Cliffs 48-year-old woman.

The collision happened at the intersection of Jacaranda Street and Murray Avenue – about 150m from the primary school premises.

Police said neither driver or the station wagon’s 15-year-old passenger were injured, and they were still investigating the cause of the accident.

Rod Beer, Red Cliffs Primary School principal, said he was hoping the accident would prompt Vic Roads to reconsider changing the Calder Road to a 40km/h school zone near the intersection.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen and it’s a ludicrous situation,” Mr Beer said.

“You’ve got a truck that couldn’t avoid a car, would he have been able to avoid a lollipop lady and kids at the crossing?

“It’s flattened the back of the car completely and if anyone was sitting in the back they’d be dead.
