Cooling river does the damage on toxic algal bloom menace

13 Apr, 2009 05:00 AM
COOLING water temperatures in the Murray River above Robinvale appear to have killed off the huge algal bloom that was approaching Sunraysia last week.

Lower Murray Water’s manager of customer services, Owen Russell, who heads the Sunraysia Regional Algal Cooordinating Committee, said yesterday testing had recorded no cells of Microcystis blue-green algae between Boundary Bend and Robinvale, and only background levels of another blue-green algae, Anabaena.

Late last week, the Microcystis bloom stretched between the Hume Dam and Boundary Bend, and was due to pass through Robinvale, 225km from Mildura by river, at the weekend.

Lower Murray Water will release the results of sampling for Microcystis algae between Koondrook and Swan Hill today.
