Dogs attack kangaroo

02 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
A DISTURBING trend of vicious dogs attacking native wildlife in Victoria has spread to Mildura.

Two staffordshire terriers recently chased, attacked and then mauled a Western Grey kangaroo on river frontage near Riverside Golf Course.

Parks Victoria Ranger, Rob McGlashan said the attack, witnessed by a Mildura businessman, was brutally vicious, resulting in the kangaroo having to be destroyed because of its injuries.

“Fortunately, local laws officers managed to catch one of the dogs and impound it, although the other has not yet been identified,” Mr McGlashan said.

“Native wildlife is protected and dog owners need to be aware that serious fines apply should their dogs attack.

“Although unregistered, an owner has taken responsibility for the impounded dog and faces the prospect of significant fines being issued by the council and also the court.”
