Fun run boost

08 Jun, 2009 05:00 AM
SMILES, stamina and sneakers went hand in hand at the Mallee 12 Fun Run yesterday.

Record numbers of entrants braved the cold to walk, jog and run along the Mildura riverfront.

Event director Mark Wilgar praised athletes’ enthusiasm.

Spectators were rugged up as they watched the passing athletes pound the pavement determined to reach the finish line.

Participants battled it out for a share in the $3000 prize pool.

Experienced competitor Ian Brade sprinted across the finish line to take out first place in the men’s section, while a surprise competitor, international marathon runner Mai Tagami won the women’s.

Junior runners and best friends; Sophie, 7, and Roviana, 8, said the inaugural race was “lots of fun” and they would be sure to participate next year.

All junior runners were awarded a medal for participating.

“The adults don’t get one, but the kids do for how far they’ve gone and how good they did,” Sophie said.
