Growers 'ready to bail out'

20/08/2008 2:57:00 PM
MANY Sunraysia growers would willingly take the Federal Government’s offer to buy out their land and water at any price, the president of the New South Wales Irrigators Council said.

Colin Thomson said plenty of people on the land were fed up and would jump at a way out.

“I think there will be some farmers who are desperate and who would take any offer.

“But there are others who think the Government is not offering enough at the moment and would wait for more money before they would accept anything.”

The Government has announced it wants to buy some Murray-Darling properties outright and send the water downstream to try to save the river system’s parched lower lakes.

There are also plans to buy out whole irrigation communities’ water rights.
