SUNRAYSIA Football Netball League president Peter Congress says he has been buoyed by “overwhelming” support from the football community following this week’s shock decision to resign his post.
Mr Congress took the fall for an Under 18 player eligibility mix-up on Saturday, but yesterday left the door ajar to continue in the position if he has unanimous support from all league clubs.
He said that as head of the league board the “blunder” ultimately rested with him and his resignation was the result of a call for action.
Wentworth Football Netball Club yesterday said it would pursue a “please explain” over advice it received from the league that did not allow Under 16 players filling in for the club’s Under 18 team which was short of players.
However, Saturday’s rival Imperials fielded four Under 16 players because it was also short of numbers, prompting Wentworth to demand an explanation.
The SFNL admitted giving Wentworth incorrect advice on the eve of the match, however, Mr Congress said a league apology had still not appeased the club.
“Ultimately, I take full responsibility for that,” Mr Congress told Sunraysia Daily this week.
