Merbein beating its drum

20 Aug, 2009 05:00 AM
MERBEIN continued it’s centenary celebrations yesterday with a monster cent sale.

Around 100 people tried their luck in a numbers draw to win an array of prizes at the annual cent sale held at Merbein Uniting Church.

The annual fundraiser attracted a larger group this year, as crowds flooded into Merbein as part of the centenary celebrations.

Merbein Uniting Church assistant Lyn Adams said the cent sale had been a huge success with many locals having returned to Merbein to mark the 100-year birthday of the town.

“I just think it’s a way of unifying the town, it’s certainly given it a lift,” she said.

“It’s certainly a way of people getting together for a good morning out. They talk around the table and they love getting the prizes. It’s a very fun morning.”

She said the event had always been popular and described it as “like a game of bingo but with more winners”.

Merbein Uniting Church continued the fun as a percussion group rehearsed for the upcoming Merbein centenary parade tomorrow.
