MILDURA pensioner Carol Meyer has called for residents to be on the lookout for a new television set top box scam.
Mrs Meyer was stunned to discover yesterday her bank account had been left virtually empty after signing up for a new digital set top box with telecommunications company Swish Digital Media early last week.
“I am feeling really horrible, but I feel more for people who will have more taken out,” she said.
“It’s just a horrible, horrible feeling.”
Last Thursday Mrs Meyer answered the door where there were two young salesmen offering to install a set top box for $150.
“They had everything right, they were doing it with an electricity company as well,” Mrs Meyer said.
“They all had proper identification, the boss came to my house later, because one of the boys couldn’t do something on the paper work.”
Then, on Wednesday the salesmen returned, telling Mrs Meyer that she didn’t need the set top box, and they would take it away because the government was going to supply her with one.
