Powerful date in Mildura’s history

19 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
TODAY marks the centenary of the electricity being switched on in Mildura.

The visit of the Governor of Victoria Sir Thomas Carmichael, from October 19 to 21, 1909, was filled with a plenty of activity, including a trip to Merbein (then named White Cliffs) where two palm trees were planted.

These were acknowledged during Merbein’s recent centenary celebrations.

A foundation stone was also laid at the hospital and the governor held meetings with a number of groups, including the Mildura Shire Council, the Caledonian Society and the district Freemasons.

A concert was held, several banquets, and a riverboat trip on the Gem to the Junction.
