River dive hurts neck

ALCOHOL has again been a significant contributing factor to injuries treated at the Mildura Base Hospital Accident and Emergency Department over what was described as a “pretty solid” Easter weekend.

Two men were flown to Melbourne for further medical treatment – one who was injured after falling in the Mildura 100 Ski Race and a local man who broke his neck when he dived off a riverbank and into shallow water.

Hospital Accident and Emergency Department senior medical officer Dr John Russell said the two serious accidents were extremely unfortunate in what was otherwise a “pretty reasonable” weekend at the hospital.

The visiting skier suffered a slight collapse of both lungs and a torn kidney and was flown to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, while a Mildura man was taken to the Austin Hospital suffering a broken neck.

“There are obvious concerns about whether he’s going to be able to walk again,” Dr Russell said.
