MILDURA’S senior public officials are remaining upbeat about the region attracting a major investment despite the collapse of Solar Systems Pty Ltd, proponent of the $420 million solar power station at Carwarp.
Solar Systems went into administration on Monday with a new buyer now being sought for the business.
Community leaders were yesterday stunned but not shattered by the collapse.
They fear it will add to community cynicism on the potential of the region as a solar capital, when combined with the loss of Enviromission’s kilometre-high tower proposal at Buronga.
Mildura Mayor Glenn Milne yesterday hinted at further investment decisions on solar investment in Mildura soon.
“There are two to three other companies, which are financially stronger and more independent than Solar Systems, which are eyeing us off. That’s one of the major reasons we need to go to America and demonstrate our interest.”
A joint delegation from Mildura Rural City Council and Mildura Development Corporation will travel to the US next month to attend the world’s biggest solar expo and visit solar companies.
“It was tough for Solar Systems when you are doing things like they were, on the edge of technology,” Cr Milne said.
