Solar protest rally

31 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
MILDURA’S case as the host of the nation’s largest solar power station was fought again in Melbourne yesterday.

Hundreds of people rallied outside the Victorian Parliament House in a continuing campaign by environmental groups to save the Solar Systems Ltd project.

Solar Systems went into receivership after winning State and Federal Government support to build a $420 million plant at Carwarp.

The environment groups are demanding government assistance to Solar Systems as the company’s administration period comes to a close.

Solar Systems was contracted to manufacture solar arrays for Australia’s first large scale solar project, a 154 MW solar power plant which would have been capable of powering 45,000 households.

Former Solar Systems employee David Turner said the barriers to transitioning to a renewable energy future were political – rather than technological.
