Taking care with guns

13 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
MILDURA police have warned all firearms owners to follow basic safety procedures after a 16-year-old Lake Cullulleraine youth was allegedly shot in the leg by a 22-year-old Mildura man early Sunday morning.

The youth was taken to Mildura Base Hospital by his parents, where he is recovering.

Regional Firearms Officer Leading Sen-Constable Gary Pearse said a common-sense approach was best when dealing with firearms.

“There are eight simple protocols to follow when using firearms,” Sen-Constable Pearse said.

“Three were broken – he didn’t always point the firearm in a safe direction, he had a firearm loaded in the car, home or camp and he didn’t always treat the firearm as being loaded.”

The incident was the first of its kind in Sunraysia in a decade.
