AN EXTRA eight gigalitres of water will be released to internationally significant wetlands along the Murray River to assist threatened river red gums and provide drought relief for wetland dependent species.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said the water, released through the Living Murray program, will flow into Lindsay and Wallpolla Islands, Gunbower Forest and Barmah Forest before summer this year and during autumn 2010.
“The government is taking action to protect the iconic river red gums along the Murray River and the unique wetlands that have been struggling with the effects of drought and climate change,” Mr Jennings said.
