MILDURA harness driver Shayne Cramp could be set for the biggest drive of his career and a crack at a slice of $250,000 in prize money in one of the biggest harness races in the country.
Cramp has given himself the best shot possible to compete in the $250,000 Fremantle Cup after a barnstorming win with Victorian-bred six-year-old Real Life in the $30,000 882 6PR Navy Cup in Perth at the weekend.
The 25-year-old driver, who has been living the dream driving for top trainer Garry Hall Snr, was ecstatic with the win, saying making the move to Perth had been well worth it even if it hadn’t been planned.
“I did a driving championship with the son of the guy I work for in New Zealand,” Cramp said yesterday.
“I knew his son from that, decided to come over to Perth for a holiday and he offered me a drive with his stable and it’s taken off from there.”
Real Life will now be set for the Fremantle Cup after his smart all-the-way win in the Navy Cup at the weekend.
A decision is yet to be announced on who will drive Real Life in the Fremantle Cup, to be held over 2902m at Gloucester Park on December 4, but Cramp has to be in the running after the weekend’s drive.
If he gets the nod, it will be the biggest moment of Cramp’s harness racing career.
