Cup of dreams

03 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
STRONG fields and big crowds are tipped to enjoy the sunshine for the running of the $9500 Wentworth Cup this afternoon.

With a record number of entries across the five-race program and more than 1000 fans expected to flood through the gates, this year’s Cup meeting is expected to be one of the most successful in years.

The race was facing extinction earlier this year when members were forced to vote on whether to make 2009 the last Wentworth Cup and disband the club.

But the call to arms proved to be a turning point, and club president Peggy McKenzie said the local community had gotten behind the event.

“(The race almost going under) certainly helped rally the community and got a lot more people involved,” McKenzie said.

“Hopefully the local people think ‘It’s still going so let’s get out there and support it’.

“People can come out and enjoy the country atmosphere, the green grass and have a good time.

“Wentworth isn’t necessarily that flash, but it’s comfortable and there’s a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.”
