Most kids at Werrimull in the 1960s played with bows and arrows and Neville Scott was one of them. When he was nine, he loved the story of Robin Hood and now 43 years later, nothing has changed.
Neville has been shooting arrows at targets since the late ’80s and calls himself a “traditional archer”.
“After school, I used to get the bow and arrows and walk around the paddocks pretending to be Robin Hood.
“I was an only child so there was a shortage of ‘merry men’, but my imagination compensated for that,” the modern day archer said.
“Mum and dad didn’t care what I did, as long as it wasn’t destructive and was a healthy pastime.
“When I was 17 and 10 days old, I joined the army, I always wanted to be a soldier and I was signed up as a signalman.
“My trade in the army was linesman, communications rigger – fear of heights was never a problem,” he said.
“I was posted to Sydney and that’s where I bought my first traditional bow – it was a Ben Pearson 55lb Recurve – it was a good bow for its day.
